“Companies are Not only Sharing IP, They are Enabling Others to Copy Their Product”, says “Friend of Cleantech Commons”, Noel Courage

The Cleantech Commons Virtual Concierge Service (VCS) is designed to curate relevant and timely information for members of the Cleantech Commons community.

We understand that the amount of information about assistance programs can sometimes be overwhelming and difficult to navigate.

Our VCS helps point entrepreneurs, startup & early-stage ventures, and growth companies to specific information sources designed to help clean technology ventures to start, grow, scale and prosper.

This week:

Friend of Cleantech Commons“, Noel Courage, a Partner at boutique IP law firm, Bereskin & Parr and a member of the firm’s Cleantech Practice Group, tells us that “many life sciences companies have been willing to permit others to access their IP to help increase the supply of equipment and development of new treatments during the COVID-19 pandemic.” Click here to read Noel’s full article!

In view of the urgency of the situation, this has recently gone beyond permitting access to IP.

Noel cites an example of a leading medical device innovator, Medtronic, which has now enabled others to copy some or all of its ventilator product by releasing full design specifications.

The immediate benefit of this new approach is shown by a Canadian company announcing it will now develop and build its own ventilator using the Medtronic open access IP and design specifications.
