“People of the Portal”: 3F Waste Recovery CEO named as a “Top Atlantic Canada Cleantech Founder in 2023”

In our “People of the Portal” series, we highlight innovative and entrepreneurial members of the Cleantech Commons Cleantech Innovation Portal and celebrate the outstanding achievements of Portal members.

This week, we are delighted to let you know that the CEO of a Cleantech Commons Cleantech Innovation Portal client, 3F Waste Recovery, has been named one of the “Top Atlantic Canada Cleantech Founders in 2023“. Congratulations Ben Wiper! Read the full story here!

3F Waste Recovery is a value-added life sciences product developer and manufacturer of natural ingredients and products derived from the by-products of the fish, farm and forest industries of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The company helps revive rural fishing communities by matching their supply with our biotechnologies for upcycling fish “waste” to make clean, sustainable, traceable products for the lucrative pet and human health markets.

They are the first in the world with a commercial-scale process for making pharmaceutical-grade cod collagen peptides, the essential ingredient to manufacture artificial skin, tissue and organs.

CEO Ben Wiper has always been passionate about food processing, giving back to the community, and “not wasting”.

Originally from a farming community, he left home nearly 30 years ago and has focused extensively on raising awareness of the circular bio-economy, developing biotechnologies and products, and creating brands and markets, primarily in the seafood sector.

Inspired by renowned futurist, Neil Stephenson, Ben founded 3F with the aim of creating well-paying science and engineering jobs in remote and rural communities by using science and circularity to close waste loops, profitably.

3F Waste Recovery was recently announced as one of the companies to have been accepted into the inaugural Atlantic Canada Cleantech Scale-up and Investment Challenge, which offers a chance to win $100,000 in equity funding.
